A Special Science Fair Thank You!

The Science Fair Team would like to thank all of the students and parents for attending this year’s science fair! We were wowed with the variety of subjects that we saw, the quality of the projects and the effort that was put into them. It was a great day spent enjoying science together as a community and we thank all of you for making it a success!
We want to give special thanks to the Florence Roche PTA and Swallow Union APT for funding this event, The Twomey Center for providing the venue, Principals Liz Garden and Peter Myerson for their support and help promoting it, the Science Fair Team volunteers (Anar Shah, Danielle Froio-Blumsack, Scott Blumsack, Kim Dyer, Emily Slater, Jeremy Slater, Linda Lee, Marie Esten, Raji Mahaadevan, Jen Neiley, Regan Obrien, Deb Kennedy and Deb June) for their tireless devotion and commitment, our judges, our volunteers, and our vendors (emPow Studios and our popular High School Robotics team) and our raffle donor STEM Beginnings. This event could not have happened without you.
We will be sending out a survey asking for feedback. We strongly encourage all parents to respond as it helps improve the fair in the future and provide an event that the majority of you want. Every year we listen to what you have to say and try our best to incorporate suggestions.
Lastly, we want to encourage parents to be a part of the future Science Fair Team. It is a chance to make your suggestions happen and provide this opportunity to our children of Groton and Dunstable.

COMMUNITY READING DAY & FOOD PANTRY DRIVE 2016 A HUGE SUCCESS!
FOOD DRIVE HAS BEEN EXTENDED THROUGH MARCH 22ND!!!
A big thank you to our volunteer readers and organizers who helped Florence Roche celebrate our 17th Community Reading Day last Thursday and Friday.  Volunteer readers from our community and beyond came to our classrooms to share with students a little about what they do as well as read a pre-selected book to each class with a guided discussion and activity taking place immediately after.  All books had a common theme of kindness, inclusion, empathy and self-esteem and were funded through a grant from the Florence Roche-Boutwell PTA.  Volunteer readers included many from our community near and far including Ms. Becky Werner from the Discovery Museum and Lola the Dog from the Groton Police Dept. along with her partner Officer Nick Beltz! Please Click Here for the full list of readers and books by grade.
As part of Community Reading Day we put two of our themes (kindness and empathy) into action with a food drive to benefit Loaves & Fishes Food Pantry.

It has been brought to the Florence Roche Boutwell PTA’s attention that while we never intended to do so, some children in our district felt excluded from events based on the names of the Mother/Son and Father/Daughter parties.  We want all children to take part of our events with excitement and for all to feel welcomed.  We feel we can achieve that simply by changing the name of the events and want your feedback.  Please Click Here to complete a quick survey about this topic.  We will be reviewing the feedback and discussing the results at our upcoming meeting.

Note From the School Nurse

Dear Parents,
Please be aware it’s cold and flu season.  It is also common for there to be other contagious illnesses going around this time of year (such as stomach bugs, strep throat, and conjunctivitis).

In order to reduce the spread of illness, please remember your child must stay home from school for the following reasons:

  • Fever of 100Degrees F or higher – Students need to be fever-free for 24 hours (without the use of fever-reducing medication such as Tylenol or Motrin) before returning to school.  Fever-reducing medicine may cover-up a fever, and the fever could return when the medicine wears off.  Your child should remain home for 24 hours after the fever has passed.
  • Vomiting or Diarrhea – Student may return to school 24 hours AFTER last episode at the School Nurse’s discretion.
  • Uncontrollable Cough
  • Contagious Bacterial Infection (such as strep throat, conjunctivitis, impetigo, etc.) – Students need to be on antibiotics for a minimum of 24 hours before returning to school.
  • Suspicious Rash – Student may return to school with written documentation from health care provider certifying that the rash is not contagious.
  • Serious Illness or Injury
If you have any questions or concerns, please call me at 978-448-6665. Thank you for helping us keep Florence Roche a happy and healthy place to learn.
Sincerely,
Natalie Petrucci, RN, BSN

Message from the President
Parents,
On behalf of the board of the Flo Ro Bo PTA, I would like to thank you so much for a very successful fall! Fall is our busiest time of the year and we thank you for all of your support.

All of our fundraising goes to supporting our children above and beyond what a strict operating school budget can do.
So far this fall, we were able to bring in Award Winning Author Grace Lin. All children in the school got to participate in meeting this author and learning some tips for writing and illustrating.
The 3rd grade used their Enrichment money to bring in the Museum of Science Star Labs, a traveling program that  explores the model sky as it changes due to the effects of Earth’s rotation and orbit.
We provided money to purchase books for the 4th grade students to take part in the Mass Children’s Book Awards program, that allows  children to read books from a list provided by the state and vote as a class on their favorite.
We also purchased a school wide book for every classroom called “What Do You Do With a Problem” By Kobi Yamada. This helps to unite all the grades by having all the classrooms read and own the book.
These are just a few of the things that we have been able to do so far thanks to the money that all of you raised this fall! We will be putting together a comprehensive list for you during the next few weeks so that you can easily see what the PTA is doing!
Coming up soon is our “Check Out Local Camps” meeting and our Mother/Son event!
If you have any questions or concerns, my email is always open!  Please don’t hesitate to contact me at president@florobopta.com . I hope that you all have a fantastic holiday break and see you in the new year!

PTA Meeting/Movie Night!
We are attempting to change it up this General Meeting we have coming up on December 6th. We would like to have it at Chunky’s in Nashua. It is free for us to use one of the movie theatres during the week; however, we need to have at least 50 people guaranteed to be there. We would start things off around 6:30 pm, order off their menu, have a quick general meeting and then watch the movie, Bad Moms! Please let me know by November 25th if you will attend this awesome evening. Be sure to share with everyone. If I do not get 50 people by the 25th then I will have to cancel and have a regular cafeteria general meeting. So make time for this one!

Message From the President

 Hello Flo Ro Bo Families,
I wanted to take the time to let you know that there is going to be a lot coming from the PTA in the next few weeks: The Holiday Fair, T-Shirt Sales and Scrips Gift Card sales, so please bear with us. Partake in what you can as we know it can be very overwhelming. We appreciate all that you do for our PTA which ultimately helps your children and their school.
The Holiday Fair is our BIGGEST fundraiser of the year, last year we raised $15,000 to help with our Teacher/Classroom Grants and Enrichment for your children.  The kids are working hard on their singing with Mr. Wiesner for their grade concerts, we are collecting used books for our sale (volunteers needed to help sort and sell), our Room Parents are putting together the classroom baskets, fundraising committee is busy taking all those prizeapalooza forms(due November 28th) and distributing tickets to the correct prizes. Our Bake Sale and International Food chairs are in need of your baking and cooking skills, be sure to sign up to help today!!
Again, I know that it is a lot to digest, especially if you are new to the Flo Ro Bo PTA, but there is always someone available to answer your questions or concerns. Please feel free to email us at florencerocheboutwellgrotonpta@gmail.com and our Facebook page and Website always have the latest information.
Thank you,
Sara Fieberg
President
Florence Roche Boutwell PTA

SEPAC Special Event!!!
Groton Dunstable SEPAC welcomes behavior analyst,
Jessica Minaham, M.ED., BCBA and her presentation about

Effective Strategies for Students with Anxiety Related Behavior

Join the Groton Dunstable Special Education Parent Advisory Council (SEPAC) for this informative discussion!

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) reports that one in four thirteen-eighteen year olds has had an anxiety disorder in their lifetime.  Without intervention, these children are at risk for poor performance, diminished learning, and social/behavior problems in school.  Understanding the role anxiety plays in a student’s behavior is crucial and using preventative strategies are key to successful intervention.  Effective behavior plans for these students must avoid the reward and punishment-based consequences from traditional behavior plans and focus instead on the use of preventative strategies and on explicitly teaching coping skills, self-monitoring, and alternative responses.

Screenagers
This screening of SCREENAGERS is for teens and adults. Parents, bring your teen! Teens, bring your parents! Or, come solo to this event!
GROTON PUBLIC LIBRARY will host a screening of the one hour documentary followed by a 20 minute discussion. More information below:
Are you watching kids scroll through life, with their rapid-fire thumbs and a six-second attention span? Physician and filmmaker Delaney Ruston saw that with her own kids and learned that the average kid spends 6.5 hours a day looking at screens. She wondered about the impact of all this time and about the friction occurring in homes and schools around negotiating screen time-friction she knew all too well.
In SCREENAGERS, as with her award-winning documentaries on mental health, Delaney takes a deeply personal approach as she probes into the vulnerable corners of family life, including her own, to explore struggles over social media, video games, academics and internet addiction. Through poignant, and unexpectedly funny stories, along with surprising insights from authors, psychologists, and brain scientists, SCREENAGERS reveals how tech time impacts kids’ development and offers solutions on how adults can empower kids to best navigate the digital world and find balance.
